Long Island Wins: A joint project with the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy
The position: Seeking Communications Director for high profile fast paced campaign to reshape the conversation about immigrants and immigration on Long Island.
The project: Launch an aggressive earned media strategy to shift the public debate about immigrants and immigration policy on Long Island. This will be used as a potential model for the rest of the nation. The campaign, supported by local funders, grassroots organizations, and local advocates, will utilize a multi-faceted approach to shift the public conversation and influence public policy, including research, polling, paid media, free media, blogs, messenger training, and legislative outreach.
This is a joint project with the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy.
Responsibilities: Together with leadership team, plan and implement an earned media plan to bring increased attention to the positive contributions of immigrants in Long Island.
Website/Blog: Update the website daily with local and national news clips and reports. Write a daily blog about immigration and
maintain an exciting open dialogue with readers to increase readership and word of mouth appeal for the blog. Conduct outreach to other high profile bloggers in New York State to increase readership and distribution of blog.
Earned Media Development: Draft press releases, statements, and talking points with the help of the campaign team. Coordinate and develop press conferences with the Program Director. Develop letters to the editor and Op-Ed’s to answer articles in the paper, and new legislation.
The Communications Director will also be responsible for collecting all news clips regarding immigration at the start of each morning and be willing to work very long hours.
Successful candidates:
* Campaign website administration & blogging experience a must
* Excellent communicators, excellent writing ability
* Well-organized and able to multi-task
* Politically savvy
* Interested in the immigration issue and have capacity to do basic research and analysis
* Witty and capable of thinking on their feet
Term of employment: There is support for 2 years of the campaign. Beyond this term, the future of the campaign will be dependent upon need, success, and ability to secure additional support.
Salary, benefits and vacation package is competitive for an organization of our size.
