Online Production Manager - Natural Resources Defense Council
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a nonprofit environmental advocacy organization with more than 1.2 million embers and activists, seeks an experienced online production manager to oversee the daily operations of its award-winning websites (including www.nrdc.org) and other online communications. This job requires strong management, technical and communication skills. NRDC, with offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Beijing, works to protect the environment and public health. The position is located in our environmentally friendly NYC office and reports to the Website Director, who in turn reports to the Communications Director.
**Primary Responsibilities**
* Work with the web department’s editorial manager to plan and implement outstanding content for all forms of NRDC online communications, including websites, email-based newsletters, podcasts, blogs, syndicated content and other emerging online channels.
* Supervise production staff and freelancers who design and produce webpages in accordance with NRDC standards. Maintain workflow. Provide guidance in use of web protocols including html, css, javascript and graphics programs.
* Train and supervise staff and freelancers in administration of Constituent Relationship Management tools (Get Active/Convio) and content management systems.
* Ensure that time-sensitive materials such as press releases and NRDC reports are posted on deadline. Supervise posting and adaptation of materials produced by NRDC’s publications department.
* Maintain the web department’s production calendar in concert with the department’s editorial manager. Coordinate with other departments on maintenance of institutional online communications calendar.
* Serve as the co-operational manager, with website director, for NRDC online properties, supervising systems administration, server security and maintenance protocols, domain registries, management of ssl certificates and DNS records. Ensure accurate maintenance of department records and archives, including photo library and website file archive.
* Coordinate with and manage relationships with vendors and consultants including project managers, web designers and developers, database specialists, Internet hosting services, photo researchers, etc.
* Hire and train production staff, freelancers, photo researchers and temporary administrative help.
* Participate in institutional and programmatic discussions and ensure that the web department’s day-to-day priorities support institutional goals.
* Provide long-range technical planning guidance and leadership. Engage in continuous learning and networking to stay abreast of professional standards and best and emerging technologies. Participate in, and lead as appropriate, processes to conceive, develop specifications for and bid out new projects.
* Manage infrastructure upgrades such as re-architecture of existing properties, transition to CSS-based programming and web standards compliance, selection of and migration to new CMS.
* Fulfill other management responsibilities including staff reviews, reporting on web department goals and achievements, occasional travel and some writing/editing of web copy in rapid-response situations
**Qualifications**
* Minimum five to seven years managing multiple websites, preferably including nonprofit experience.
* Experience supervising staff and freelancers; ability to coach staff in their professional development and to encourage an effective team environment.
* Demonstrated ability to stay abreast of and employ best-of-breed web tools and online best practices.
* Good design eye and understanding of information architecture. Strong communication skills.
* Familiarity with ECRMs and Content Management Systems. Knowledge of Get Active/Convio and Drupal desirable.
* Fluency or proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
